The Lille Tourism & Convention Bureau gives you the unique opportunity to discover landmark locations that make the souvenir of the Great War so strong and powerful in the region.

In Fromelles, you will visit the Museum of the Battle of Fromelles, where you will relive the deadly battle which took place on 19th and 20th July 1916. Through the museum’s different rooms, experience the atmosphere of the British, Australian and German trenches.

After visiting the museum, your guide will take you on site, to the war memorials and Commonwealth cemeteries, especially the Australian Memorial Park and the VC Corner Cemetery. On the road to Ypres, we will take you to the 1914 Christmas truce memorial in Ploegsteert, and then to the Saint Nicolas of Messines church, rebuilt in 1928. Its 11th century Norman church hosted a German field hospital during the war.

 The tour finished in Ypres, a city that was beautifully rebuilt after the war. Its landmark monuments, such as Saint George’s Church, the Cloth Hall and Menin Gate, are heartbreaking testimonies to the huge destructions that struck the region during the Great War.

On July 19th and 20th 1916, Fromelles became the theatre of a bloody battle in which British and Australian troops were defeated against the German 6th Army. This battle remains infamous today as it was responsible for one of the greatest losses in Australian lives in less than 24 hours. Nowadays, many monuments and venues around Fromelles still commemorate the many lives which were lost on those terrible days, on both sides.

The 3h tour will take you to the Trou Aid Post, the V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial Park, Pheasant Wood Cemetery, which has been here for not even five years. Every year, new bodies are identified and buried there, so they can rest in peace.

The highlight of your tour will be the Museum of the Battle of Fromelles, which opened in July 2014. Rather small and intimate, it is the perfect place for a moment full of emotion, as you are taken back to July 1916 through the faces and lives of soldiers who fought for freedom.

Learn about the Great War in the Artois region with the Lille Tourism and Conventions Bureau.

The experience begins with the Lens' 14-18 - War and Peace History Center, which offers 650 m² of museum trails that present a poignant depiction of the horrors of the daily warfare and the scale of destruction in the area.
We then move on to discover Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, which is home to the largest First World War cemetery in France and the great Ring of Remembrance, an architectural oval that was inaugurated by the President of the French Republic in 2014 and movingly bears the names of 580,000 dead soldiers of all nationalities.
The tour comes to an end with a visit to Vimy, which houses an impressive monument to the sacrifice of Canadian troops in 1917 and offers a majestic view over Lens and its surroundings.

Since 1928, every evening at 8 pm, the Last Post Ceremony has taken place under the Ieper Menin Gate to pay homage to those who fell defending the Ieper Salient during the First World War. Aboard the Lille Region Tour, embark for an emotional journey that will take you back to some of the darkest moments of European history.

On the way to Ieper, the Lille Region Tour will take you to several memorials such as the Berks Cemetery Extension, Prowse Point Cemetery and the Christmas Truce monument, commemorating the 1914 Christmas Truce in Ploegstreet. You will also visit the "Hill 60" site in Zillebeke, where you will be able to see the remains of bunkers and craters, witnesses to the battle that took place there in 1915.

You will arrive in Ieper before the Last Post Ceremony takes place, so you have time to visit the historic city centre, which was reconstructed after the Great War.
