Aristide Maillol was a French sculptor and engraver of the early 20th century.
His sculpture was influenced by ancient Greek art and the Italian Renaissance tradition, and he sought to create harmony and beauty through his work.
The result of several years of research supported by the Dina Vierny Foundation, this exhibition offers a renewed reading of Maillol: that of a hard-working, probing artist who makes, unmakes, remakes, and builds a great body of work from a small body of forms. The exhibition reveals this creative process, which is sometimes wrongly interpreted as the continual repetition of the same feminine ideal, whereas Maillol's unique formal research is expressed in a perpetual renewal.
