On July 19th and 20th 1916, Fromelles became the theatre of a bloody battle in which British and Australian troops were defeated against the German 6th Army. This battle remains infamous today as it was responsible for one of the greatest losses in Australian lives in less than 24 hours. Nowadays, many monuments and venues around Fromelles still commemorate the many lives which were lost on those terrible days, on both sides.
The 3h tour will take you to the Trou Aid Post, the V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial Park, Pheasant Wood Cemetery, which has been here for not even five years. Every year, new bodies are identified and buried there, so they can rest in peace.
The highlight of your tour will be the Museum of the Battle of Fromelles, which opened in July 2014. Rather small and intimate, it is the perfect place for a moment full of emotion, as you are taken back to July 1916 through the faces and lives of soldiers who fought for freedom.
