CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR
From 9 March to 12 March 2023
With over 100 French and international galleries and 750 artists presented each year, Lille Art Up!
Theme 2023: Memory Games
"Memory is the future of the past" said Paul Valéry. Individual or collective, immediate or distant, it is the immaterial material at the origin of all creation.
Artists shape it, interpret it, sometimes disguise it. Contemporary creation brings to these memory games an innovative aesthetic and new fields of expression.
Jeux de Mémoire is the theme of this year's Lille Art Up! to honour contemporary artists inspired by the creative treatment of the past, history or their personal memories, in the multiple forms of painting, sculpture, visual arts, textiles, ceramics, installation, etc:
In the image of anachronistic tales, drawing inspiration from mythological and medieval history full of wonders and heroic tales. This imagery inspires storytelling artists who use human beings with either plant or animal attributes or supernatural powers in a vanished universe.
In the form of enigma and intrigue: The works present the viewer with enigmatic settings that are rooted in everyday life. The narrative is both given and concealed. The work does not seek to fix a story but rather to perpetuate the work of fiction or illusion.
Through liberated interpretation: pastiche and parody are exercises that have been assumed in the last decade. Paintings "after" David, Boucher, Mondrian... are not the mark of a drying up of the imagination. On the contrary, they are an opportunity to assert one's own style.
