From April 2 to July 10, 2022

Supported by unprecedented research and by the presentation of works by major Arab artists never presented in Europe, the exhibition Picasso and the Arab avant-gardes highlights, thanks to a set of some 70 works, the fruitful dialogue between the Spanish master and modern Arabs.

Author of Guernica, portraitist of the Algerian fighter Djamila Boupacha defended by Gisèle Halimi, Picasso was an icon for the Arab artistic scenes marked by Independence. Claiming the moral example of the Andalusian master, the Arab avant-gardes engage through their paintings in the face of the tragedies of their countries.

The exhibition retraces in a new way the fundamental artistic and ideological issues of the 20th century: figuration, tribal arts, pacifism, anti-colonialism and the dream of a better world. Alternately cubist, classical, surrealist, close to abstraction without ever yielding to it, Picasso offers new expressive possibilities to figuration. Moving away from academic rules imported from the West, modern Arabs perceive Cubist deformations as sharing affinities with the altered figuration of the Islamic tradition. They consider Picasso the Andalusian as one of their own.
