Marwan Mohammed is now a well-known sociologist. Yet "it wasn't a foregone conclusion", as his mother often says. His modest background, his severe failure at school, his orientation towards a "professional" course of study: nothing destined him for a successful university career. The author recounts his youth "in the neighborhood", his efforts to "learn how to become a student", his involvement in associations and sports, his intellectual battles... Marwan Mohammed didn't do it alone. A powerful tool for emancipation and popular education, sociology enables him to think of his personal history as a veritable collective history, in which solidarity and mutual aid take precedence.
