After a 40-year absence, the emblematic Dance Theatre of Harlem returns to France with an exceptional tour, from Paris to Roubaix. Founded in 1969, this revolutionary New York company has set itself the mission of democratizing ballet and opening its doors to all, while promoting diversity of talent.
For their return, 28 virtuoso dancers deliver an avant-garde program combining classical, neoclassical (George Balanchine, Robert Garland) and contemporary works. Programs A and B, presented in alternation, bring cultures and styles into dialogue to the rhythm of eclectic music, from Bach and Stevie Wonder to Radiohead and James Blake.
Program B, to be discovered on Thursday February 19 at 8pm and Saturday February 21 at 3pm, features an original selection of ballets combining classical, neoclassical and contemporary influences, while exploring major cultural and social themes.
On the program?
nyman String Quartet No. 2_ (Robert Garland) ? A powerful, introspective tribute to Arthur Mitchell and John Carlos, with music by Michael Nyman.
_Take Me With You_ (Robert Bondara) ? A Radiohead-inspired duet that plunges into the intimacy of human relationships through emotional choreography.
_Donizetti Variations_ (George Balanchine) ? A shimmering, virtuosic ballet celebrating the tradition and demands of classical ballet.
_Higher Ground_ (Robert Garland) ? A brilliant fusion of classical and modern dance, featuring Stevie Wonder and a reflection on social issues past and present.
For almost 60 years, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has set the global benchmark for accessible, audacious ballet. Whether you're a dance aficionado or simply curious, this is the perfect way to discover dance from a different angle.
