In homage to the commuting epics of his childhood, the director presents his project in the form of a film, a theatrical happening and a concert.
Mohamed El Khatib?s 504 performance, conceived to coincide with his exhibition at the Mucem, Renault 12, re-enacts a founding myth of the Mediterranean: the Homeric episode of the return to Ithaca, reactivated by the North African families of the diaspora who return to their homeland every summer. Borrowing its title from the mythical Peugeot model, a sturdy family car, it presents itself as a chronicle of these summer transhumances between the 1970s and 1990s, synonymous with vacations, reunions and freedom. Mohamed El Khatib?s reminiscence of these fully-loaded cars, launched on a journey as long as it was carefree, has enabled him to create a popular memory of immigration, elevated to the rank of intangible heritage of the Mediterranean.
Produced in collaboration with residents of Marseille, Bobigny, Evry and Roubaix, the performance celebrates the ritual nomadism that links the two shores of the Mediterranean, from both a sociological and sentimental perspective. Discover their testimonies on stage and in film, before ending the evening in music with DJ sets featuring the musical heritage of the Maghreb.
