Synonymous with disorder in everyday language, anarchy became a fully-fledged political philosophy in the mid-19th century. Because of the importance they placed on individual freedom, anarchist ideas captivated—from the moment they emerged in the 1840s— from Courbet to Banksy, including the activists of May ’68 and, later still, the punks. The exhibition **No God, No Master! Art and Anarchy from Courbet to Banksy** offers a glimpse into this little-known history, which resonates with political and social questions that are highly relevant today. Heir to the canvases of Gênes and Nîmes, carried across the Atlantic as workwear and then around the world as a staple of everyday wardrobes, jeans sometimes also take on a rebellious dimension. Proclaiming the identity of the wearer and serving as a blank canvas for designers, **Denim Revolution** traces its history from the waist down, blending industrial heritage with contemporary fashion. The exhibition “Neither God Nor Master! Arts and Anarchy%BB benefits from the support and exceptional loans from the Musée d’Orsay, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the Musée de l’Annonciade in Saint-Tropez.
