Remnant of a 7th-century collegiate church, this is the oldest religious building in the Lille area. In the Romanesque crypt, the 3rd-century sarcophagus of Saint Piat is covered by a more recent slab of Tournai bluestone. In 1933, a carillon was installed in the bell tower.
Comprising 42 bells weighing no less than 7 tonnes, it is considered one of the most accurate in Europe. 41 levers and 20 pedals enable a carillonneur to play a wide repertoire. However, it's thanks to an enormous spiked drum that the ritornellos of "Petit Quinquin", "Roi d'Agobert", "Mandoline d'oiseau" and "Bon tabac" sound every quarter-hour. You have to climb 165 steps to discover the carillon.
