Église Saint Pierre-Saint Paul

  • Cathedrals, churches and abbeys
23 rue du Marché, 59000 Lille
The church was built between 1854 and 1857 by architect Pierre Caloine (1818-1859).
Built of red brick in a neo-Romanesque style, the church is typical of the Northern style of popular places of worship, as seen, for example, in Saint-Martin d?Esquermes. Its proportions are quite imposing, with a length of 76 m, a width of 41 m, a height under vault of 20 m (supported by 14 columns weighing 15,000 kg each) and a steeple height of 59 m (including a 3 m cross). Built on the site of a former brickworks, the church has a vast crypt which, since the 1980s, has been home to the city?s three fencing clubs, Vauban Lille, LUC Escrime and Les Gentilshommes de la Brette.

The tympanum above the main door depicts the tetramorph (Greek for "4 forms"), which associates a figure with each of the four Evangelists. The man is Matthew: his Gospel begins with the human genealogy of Jesus. The lion is Mark: in the opening lines of his Gospel, John the Baptist cries out in the desert ("a cry arose in the wilderness"). The bull is Luke: in the opening verses of his Gospel, he alludes to Zacharias offering a sacrifice to God, and in traditional bestiary, the bull is a sign of sacrifice. The eagle is John: his Gospel begins with the celestial mystery.

Since 2010, the altar of Saint Paul has been adorned with a painting, The Conversion of Saint Paul, by Jérôme Cartellier (1813-1892) A pupil of Ingres, Jérôme Cartellier exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1835 onwards. A recognized painter, he received numerous state commissions. In this case, the painting of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III for the high altar in the chapel of the Lille citadel.

The church?s current organs were built by E. Muller and inaugurated on March 1, 1959. They comprise 3 manuals, 1 pedalboard, 42 stops and 2552 pipes.

The church has two bells, both dating from 1920, the original bells having been looted for metal by the German occupying army in 1917.
