In 1915, Louise de Bettignies joined the British Secret Intelligence Service, for whom she ran the "Alice network", collecting information on the German occupiers. Initially confined to the Lille metropolitan area, the network expanded, with the help of Marie-Léonie Vanhoutte, to an area as far as Saint-Quentin. Arrested on October 21, 1915, Louise de Bettignies died in German captivity on September 27, 1918.
