Notre-Dame Cathedral de la Treille

Installed on the town’s ancient feudal mound, historians assume that the Counts of Flanders had their keep built here. The first stone was laid in 1854, and the construction of this sumptuous cathedral lasted 145 years. Its current façade was inaugurated in 1999. Its half-ancient, half-modern appearance is a source of great charm and curiosity for visitors.

A long construction

The foundation stone for this neo-Gothic religious edifice was laid in 1854, but the work had to be interrupted several times for lack of sufficient resources. In 1947, Cardinal Liénart decided to invest in this ambitious program, but the façade remained incomplete until 1995. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Treille was officially completed in 1999. The monument bears no resemblance to the original design, giving it an unmistakable allure.

Eclecticism Lille

The bold project to complete the cathedral’s façade was entrusted to architects Pierre-Louis Carlier and Peter Rice, the rose window was signed by artist Ladislas Kijno and the exceptional portal by sculptor Georges Jeanclos. By day, the light streams in and is reflected in the immense glass roof. Inside, you’ll be impressed by the heights and decor of this building.
