The Musée de l'Hospice Comtesse and the Palais des Beaux-arts are fortunate to house unique collections of 18th-century tapestries. These tapestries evoke Lille?s great textile past, during a period of rapid economic expansion. The Manufacture Werniers was one of the most important in Northern Europe.
These monumental tapestries took months to make. Featuring various themes and motifs, including famous country scenes, they were objects of luxury and pageantry, prized by aristocrats, the new bourgeoisie and religious communities. Their presentation promises to be spectacular.
Large, fragile and complex to display due to their weight and sensitivity to light, these tapestries have undergone major restoration work, subsidized by the DRAC des Hauts-de-France, from 2023 to 2026. This exhibition will showcase the tapestries in all their original glory, as well as sharing the latest research on these rare textiles.
