Although commonly associated with disorder, in the mid-19th century, anarchy emerged as a fully-fledged political ideology. As the first movement to delegitimize all forms of authority, this political current was structured around a single motto: “Neither God nor master!” Because of the importance they placed on individual freedom, anarchist ideas captivated many artists from the moment they emerged. The works of these creators have been imbued with this philosophy, just as they have helped to portray it, spread it, and examine it, to the point of becoming an integral part of libertarian culture.
Spanning more than a century and a half of history and creative expression, this exhibition explores the connections between anarchist movements, anarchist thought, and the arts in all their forms, from the 19th century to the present day.
