In 1848, a group of British artists, the Pre-Raphaelites, broke with the conventions of Victorian England and denounced an art they considered corrupt since Raphael. Their rejection of academic art and their quest for sincerity—sometimes deemed naive—sparked heated debates.
For a long time, the history of the Pre-Raphaelites was written from a male perspective, centered on its heroes John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. However, recent research reveals the central and ongoing role of women within the group. The exhibition aims to trace how these female artists embraced the movement at a time when the status of women in Great Britain was undergoing profound change.
The exhibition runs from March 6 to June 27, 2027.
