A durable indigo fabric, five pockets, orange topstitching that matches the metal rivets, a label sewn into the back, and a buttoned fly. This is the image we have of jeans, a term that refers both to the Italian fabric whose origins are said to be linkedto the city of Genoa, as it does the pants sold in the 19th century by Levi Strauss in the United States. Originally designed to protect the worn-out knees of gold prospectors, jeans took off, setting out to conquer a West captivated by the American dream, and eventually clothed the entire world. Weaving their way into our daily lives, they became a wardrobe staple, a means of self-expression that proclaims our identity, and a blank canvas on which designers past and present have expressed themselves.
