In the summer of 2027, in conjunction with the bicentennial of photography, La Piscine is hosting a carte blanche for the young contemporary artist Thomas Devaux. Born in Marcq-en-Barœul in northern France, the photographer—who now lives and works in Paris—defines himself as a visual artist. In his work, photography blurs the lines regarding its true nature, to the point where it sometimes merges with abstract painting, a design object, or even a minimalist art installation. The photographic image thus blurs the lines and straddles the boundaries between different art forms. His works will therefore find a natural home at the Roubaix Museum of Art and Industry, which, since its opening in 2001, has continually challenged the hierarchies between the arts through its collections and programming.
Reflection, the mirror, and light are also at the heart of the artist’s work, as he explores the relationship between the profane and the sacred in the age of consumer society. For several years now, he has been transforming his photographs by blending them with dichroic glass. Using light as an artistic medium in its own right, the works on display at the museum will interact with the reflections and stained-glass windows of the pool, as well as with the collections, in a unique installation at the heart of the former swimming pool and within the permanent exhibition.
