Description
The Neo-Gothic crypt of Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral, an architectural gem that has been cleaned and restored, restored and enhanced by a lighting design in 2022, now serves as the showcase for the “Cathedral Treasure.”
Built of red brick and white stone, the Neo-Gothic crypt is a vast vaulted space that runs beneath the cathedral’s chapels, choir, and transepts.
The “Cathedral Treasury” consists of some sixty pieces of goldsmith art, mostly from the late 19th and 20th centuries, crafted by talented goldsmiths, some of whom hailed from renowned Parisian and Lyon-based dynasties such as Poussielgue-Rusand, Chertier, and Favier.
While these ciboria, chalices, patens, monstrances, and reliquaries—as well as several objects that belonged to the bishops of Lille and, more specifically, to Cardinal LIENART—are no longer, or almost no longer, usedfor the liturgy, this is the first time they are being presented to the public in the form of a magnificent exhibition!
The Treasury of Lille Cathedral is not merely an exhibition space: it is a living space, a testament to memory, craftsmanship, and faith, where beauty forges a link between the past and the future, and between heaven and earth.
