Description

Erected in front of the town hall, the Loos belfry immediately catches the eye with its brick silhouette, the first major achievement of architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier. As you approach, an almost unexpected atmosphere emerges: a Virginia creeper envelops the first two levels, softening the austerity of the building and offering a rural charm rare for a neo-Flemish edifice. Higher up, the architecture becomes more imposing. Four circular watchtowers flanked by loopholes and machicolations give the belfry a defensive character that contrasts with the vegetated base. This play of opposites creates a visual dynamic that accompanies the eye all the way to the top. The building culminates in an elegant lantern, topped by a slate roof with a bell tower and spire, in the tradition of northern belfries. The result is a refined silhouette that blends regional inspiration, medieval heritage and an eye for detail. An ideal discovery for those wishing to explore an authentic architectural heritage, between local history and the signature of a major architect.
