Located on the border between Bondues and Marcq-en-Bar?ul, the château and its grounds are managed by the Fondation Prouvost Septentrion, created in 1975 by the owners Anne and Albert Prouvost, a bourgeois family of industrialists specializing in textiles. Their fortune dates back to the creation of a wool combing factory in Roubaix in the mid-19th century. Passionate about travel, art and culture, the couple set up the Foundation in charge of the Château du Vert-Bois, its 60-hectare park and a village dedicated to arts and crafts.
The origins of the château go back much further, to the 15th century. The buildings that can be seen today are much more recent: 17th century for the conciergerie and 18th century for the château. The date 1743 can be read on the pediment of the conciergerie porch, but this corresponds to the date the building was modified, not created. The building is in pure regionalist style, with a high dovecote tower, stone and brick. You'll notice that many of the larger farms in the region have a similar dovecote tower.
In the park, rare species such as Norway Maples, Liquidambar, Purple Beech, Paulownia and Japanese Sophora, as well as sculptures, punctuate the walks through this timeless setting.
