On Boulevard Leclerc, the imposing monument to the dead where Peace overcomes the hydra of war reminds us of the martyrdom that Roubaix experienced between October 1914 and October 1918. A bas-relief shows women led by soldiers, like more than 8,000 deported "voluntary workers". The sober statue bears the horn of abundance lost during the occupation, during which the industrial city saw all the machines of its factories transferred to Germany or destroyed.
