At the entrance to Lille Zoo, a monument dedicated to the "20,000 pigeons who died for their country" and to "pigeon fanciers shot for keeping carrier pigeons" is a reminder of the important role played by messenger birds during the Great War.
A pigeon was even named to the Order of the French Nation at Verdun. Since then, the airwaves have replaced the wings for the transfer of wartime information, but pigeon racing has remained a popular pastime in the north of France.
