Place du Temple, 59000 Lille

Description

In the heart of Lille, the Protestant temple stands in the Place du Temple, with a silhouette that immediately catches the eye. Built between 1868 and 1871 by Strasbourg architect Alphonse Roederer, it illustrates the architectural élan of the 19th century, combining rigor and sobriety. As you approach, you?ll discover its imposing stone bell tower?porch, once topped by a wooden spire, now replaced by a solid stone spire that reinforces the building?s mineral appearance. A succession of windows then reveals the presbytery and annexes, harmoniously integrated into the building. Inside, the eye is immediately drawn to the ceiling: a remarkable coffered wood panelling that underlines the elegance of the framework and creates a warm, contemplative atmosphere. The temple is also home to a single-manual organ, the sound of which still accompanies services and musical events today. Owned by the municipality and listed as a historic monument since 2010, the Protestant temple is a member of the United Protestant Church of France. When you visit it, you'll discover not only a spiritual place, but also a precious example of Lille?s religious architecture, marked by a balance between simplicity and monumentality.
