Our belfries brick giants
It’s no coincidence that belfries are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The belfry is a symbol! It’s the symbol of communal freedom, just as the dungeon is the symbol of the power of the lords, and the steeple the symbol of the Church. Lille is home to 7 belfries, all built in neo-Flemish style, with the exception of the Art Deco Lille Town Hall. At 104 metres, it’s the tallest municipal building in France! Six other brick-and-stone giants dominate the metropolitan skyline: the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also in Lille, as well as the belfries of Armentières, Comines, Loos, Tourcoing and Wambrechies.
AppointmentsGrand Place!
Quite simply, the Grand Place is where you’ll find all the soul of Lille and its metropolis: the merchant soul of the great Flemish fairs, the festive soul of major cultural and sporting events… and not forgetting the convivial soul, as this is where you’ll meet up with family and friends! But be careful not to choose the wrong meeting place: not only are there several “Grand Place” in the metropolis, from Roubaix to Tourcoing, via Armentières and Comines. And the most famous of them all, the one in Lille, is actually called “La place du Général de Gaulle” on the maps. In short, it’s simple… or almost!
