Like the 17th-century city gates that opened carnivals and processions, the Golden Monoliths by Spanish artist SpY guide the public and parade participants into the heart of the city and its Fiesta. They transform Lille?s urban landscape with fourteen golden containers erected vertically along Rue Faidherbe.
This monumental intervention reconfigures our everyday vision of the city, transforming industrial objects into symbols that alter our perception of space.
Originally conceived as utilitarian structures for transport and global trade, the containers are decontextualized and painted gold. Far from being a decorative gesture, this metamorphosis turns their industrial essence on its head, giving them an artistic meaning between function and symbol, utility and mythology.
Come closer and use your senses to discover the secrets guarded by some of the monoliths.
